After a couple of hours, we realised that the problem wasn’t in the wire winding, but in the core of the string. He told me to take my bass along to Rotosound and have some strings made until they got it right. To solve the problem I got in touch with James How and told him his D and G strings were great but the E and A didn’t vibrate properly. It was the same with Rotosound but there was something about them that was almost there but not quite. I tried everybody’s strings but the E and the A’s just didn’t work. “It was in 1966 and I was looking for that Danelectro sound again. The bright punchy high energy sound this string offered and so much a big part of early rock music as we know it, quickly grew in popularity to all four corners of the globe and remains the leading contender to this present day. This is the string that James How and John Entwistle perfected into what was to become the industry standard. The string that started a revolution and brought the bass player from the back line to the front. These sets allow players to lower their tunings down to B and an earthshaking F# respectively. I am also the first choice bagpipe player for a large number of funeral directors in Sheffield, Barnsley, Huddersfield, Manchester, Leeds and Nottingham. Two specialist sets from the Swing Bass 66 range aimed at bass players who use drop tunings. I have appeared playing the bagpipes on TV in ITV’s ‘The Dales’ and ‘The Lakes’ for weddings featured on the shows. I’ve since played at 1000’s of weddings, parties, corporate dinners, Burns Nights, Hogmanays and funerals, etc. I played the bagpipes for many years with Ashbourne and eventually took a break from the pipe band world and went on to promote myself as a solo bagpipe player. Within a year I was playing with the Seaforth Higlanders in Mansfield and eventually I went on to compete in Grade 4 with Ashbourne Pipes and Drums at competitions all over England and Scotland. My mother saw how interested I was and in no time bought me a practice chanter and asked her friend Alec Maclean (ex Pipe Major of The Seaforth Highlands and Nottingham Police Pipe Band) to teach me. It was seeing a bagpiper player at our hotel in Aberfeldy whilst on holiday that did it. Nobody in the family played and I was encouraged to learn them at the age of ten. Coming from a Scottish family (on my mother’s side!) and being brought up with Scottish music and holidays in Scotland I always loved the bagpipes as a child.
